The
Jones / Hertzler House
The future home
of the Tri-County Heritage Center.
The
rehabilitation of the Jones/Hertzler house. located at the entrance
to the Morgantown Business Park on timber Road, is one of the Society's
on-going projects. This 18th century stone farmhouse was donated
to the Society by the business park's owner, the late Bernard Hankin.
Upon
completion, this facility will house the Society's offices, the
library and research center, and museum. The house, built through
several architectural periods, will serve to interpret its own evolution.
Jacob
Light owned the property from 1747 until 1754 when he sold it to
his son, John. In 1772, John Light sold it to John Rickabaugh who
lived there until he turned it over to his son-in-law, John Hertzler,
in 1782. the property remained in the Hertzler family until 1796
when John Jones became the next owner. In 1800, Jacob Lapp, son-in-law
of John Rickabaugh, purchased this farm tract, and it stayed in
the Lapp family until 1828 when Matthias Schoener/Shaner bought
the property.
David
Plank, the son of Mennonite Bishop Peter Plank, was the next owner
in 1836. He farmed here for 51 years. Thus began the 88 year ownership
of the Hertzler family, Henry M., John M. and finally Ralph, who
sold the farm to the Hankin group in 1975. Tri-County Heritage Society
became the owners in 1992.
